UMW Toyota Motor is the appointed Toyota distributor of Toyota Motor Corporation, which is based in Japan.

UMW Toyota Motor is engaged in the assembly, marketing and distribution of Toyota vehicles and products in Malaysia. It is also responsible for sales & marketing, business operations and advertising for the LEXUS brand in Malaysia.

Background

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, is a joint-venture between UMW Holdings Berhad and Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation.

UMW Holdings

UMW is one of the largest locally-owned companies in Malaysia, with a diverse portfolio of business units ranging from motor vehicles to manufacturing, engineering, agriculture insurance.

Founder

UMW Holdings was founded by Chia Yee Soh, who started working at 14 as an apprentice in a bicycle repair shop in Singapore. In 1917, Chia started his own automotive repair shop - United Motor Works in Singapore. Chia passed his helm of UMW to his eldest son Charlie Chia Cheng Guan. Charlie helmed the group and lead UMW from a motor workshop into a leading Malaysian conglomerate - only for the family to lose it in the 1980s because of financial difficulties. Today, UMW Holdings Bhd is controlled by the Malaysian government. However, the Chia family still has their business empire mainly in Singapore. Charlie's son Timothy Chia Chee Ming, is currently the Chairman and Group CEO of Hup Soon Globalin Singapore.

Because of its size, as well as its reputation for reliability and honesty, UMW was selected by Toyota Motor Corporation as its partner in Malaysia.Today, UMW Toyota Motor is primarily engaged in the assembly, marketing and distribution of Toyota vehicles and marketing and distribution of Lexus vehicles.

Online Communities

Tribe Toyota

Tribe Toyota is an online community created by UMW Toyota Motor.

Starting out in 2003 as the Funser community which catered only to Toyota Unser owners, it was later renamed Tribe Toyota and expanded to accommodate all Toyota model owners in Malaysia.

In addition to serving as an interactive hub for the Toyota community, Tribe Toyota offers yearly events to its members subsidized by UMW Toyota Motor.

Toyota Owner's Journal

The Toyota Owners’ Journal[1] is claimed as a first of its kind in Malaysia. Toyota owners are able to log and track details pertaining to their vehicles such as, service records, vehicle specifications, maintenance expenditures and other related particulars. The Journal also offers a personal reminder service for users to set personal and vehicle-related reminders (e.g. oil changes, road tax renewals, outstanding traffic summonses etc.).

Corporate Social Responsibility

Toyota Eco Youth

This is an annual competition aimed at instilling environmental awareness in the younger generation.

Conceived in 2001, Toyota Eco Youth is run in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and involves teams of students and teachers working together to do project on reducing the environmental impact within their schools compound.

Every year, 16 finalist teams will be chosen, each representing 1 state and Federal Territory (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan). The finalists will be given a small cash grant to implement their ideas throughout the year. There will be periodic inspections by Toyota officials all through the contest period, which culminates in an exhibition and presentation of ideas in Kuala Lumpur by all the teams. The teams with the most successful projects will be awarded cash prizes.

Road Safety Campaign

In 2006, UMW Toyota Motor started a 5-year Road Safety Programme targeted at children aged between 7 and 12 to increase their awareness of traffic rules and good road safety practices.

Toyota Classics

Every year since 1990, the Toyota Classics programme has brought a different international orchestra to perform in Malaysia. Some notable guests of Toyota Classic are the New York Symphonic Ensemble, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Royal Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Vienna Operetta Orchestra.

All proceeds from Toyota Classics are donated to various charitable organizations in Malaysia. To date, Toyota Classics has donated almost 4 million ringgit to charity.

Mobility to Medicine

UMW Toyota Motor has donated an 11-seater, high-roof Toyota Hiace window van to Assunta Hospital to help kick-start their mobile medical clinic project. This project is part of a larger initiative by Assunta Hospital to provide free medical care to the poorer communities around in the Klang Valley area.
